Lowland Gorilla

Native to the tropical forests of Cameron, Republic of the Congo, Central African Republic, Angola, and Equatorial Guinea, lowland gorillas are one of the largest members of the primate order. Gorillas are remarkably intelligent, and are believed to be one of the smartest animals in the world.

  • Characteristics: Due to their intelligence, gorillas can learn to use tools as well as communicate with humans and other gorillas through basic sign language. Hand painted and beautifully crafted, this gorilla is sauntering over to say hello!
  • Size and Color: 4.25 inches long and 3.75 inches tall, this model touch shorter and taller than a soda can placed on its side. Lowland gorillas often have dark brownish-gray coats, and mature males often have silver hair on their back, hence the name “silverbacks.”

    Sadly, lowland gorillas are classified as endangered due to poaching, habitat loss, and habitat fragmentation. Gorillas are also susceptible to natural diseases, the most destructive of which is Ebola. Despite being critically endangered, lowland gorilla numbers are slowly increasing due to beneficial legislation and sanctuaries, and there is reason to believe they can rebound in the near future.

    Present Status Lowland gorillas are classified as a Critically Endangered species. They’ve experienced a steep population decline from disease and hunting, along with continued habitat loss and low reproductive rates. Conservation efforts include stricter enforcement of laws protecting this species and improved Ebola virus prevention.
