  • History

The colonists who settled North America in the 16th and 17th centuries loved horses, particularly horse racing. In those days, horses were raced on a quarter path, a quarter-mile-length track. Horses bred to speed through that distance faster than any other became known as quarter horses. These horses remained popular as colonists became settlers and settlers became cowboys, and those cowboys desired a fast, smart horse with plenty of endurance and strength. They continued to perfect the Quarter Horse, choosing the best representatives for breeding and creating a strong animal capable of high speeds.
