A foal is born ready to walk, with legs nearly as long as an adult horse, yet with a smaller body and head. This palomino foal demonstrates these proportions. Although adult palominos are golden, foals can be a wider variety of colors, and their coats will darken as they age.

  • Scientific Name: Equus caballus
  • Characteristics: Some might call it gangly, but horse lovers know this palomino Foal is beautiful and graceful, already equipped to run, with a short mane and tail perfect for its size.
  • Size and Color: Unlike golden-colored adult palominos, foals have a wider range of color possibilities, from the bright white shown in this 3-inch-long figure, to cream, peach, and even dull gold.
  • The Palomino Foal is part of the Winner's Circle Horses collection.

  • History

Long-favored for their golden color, even by famous royals such as Queen Isabella of fifteenth-century Spain, palominos have only recently been understood from a genetic standpoint. Science tells us that there are basically two colors of horse: brown and black. All differences are the result of genetic modifications. In Palominos, the base color is chestnut, but a single semi-dominant dilution gene allows the golden palomino color. Based on the parents’ base coats and the genetic roulette played each time a horse breeds, colors can range from creme palomino to the ideal golden palomino to darker seasonal palominos and chocolate palominos.
