  • History

The province of Friesland in the northern Netherlands is the original home of the beautiful Friesian horse. It was originally bred for utilitarian purposes, its calm disposition ideal for farm work. But its attractive mane and unique action caught the attention of riders, and the horse began to be bred smaller to pull carriages and carry riders rather than for heavy farm work. As a result, when mechanization reduced the need for horse-powered transportation, the Friesian sadly went into decline. However, the breed was rediscovered after World War One, and its notable characteristics helped to ensure its future well being. Again bred for riding and showing, Friesians are a delight to ride as well as pleasurable companions.
