A foal is a young horse, not yet one-year-old, and Appaloosa refers to a spotted coat. All young horses appear disproportional with their longer legs. In fact, a newborn foal’s legs are about 90% the length of an adult horse’s, allowing them to walk and run almost immediately.

History

The history of the Appaloosa breed is as spotted as its distinctive coat. The story begins with Spanish explorers, who brought horses to Mexico in the 1500s. From there, the horses spread throughout North America, where they were often captured for use by native tribes. One such tribe, the Nez Perce of the Northwest, took to breeding the horses and became exceptionally adept as horseback riders and hunters. Over the course of decades, the home of the Nez Perce in modern Idaho was settled by more homesteaders from the east, and they noted a spotted horse ridden by the Native American tribe that lived near the Palouse River in Idaho. These were the Nez Perce, of course, and the spotted horse soon became known as the Palouse Horse. It grew in popularity due to its unique coat, and its name underwent several iterations before the modern Appaloosa came into being.
