History:

The technical term for large or giant animals is "megafauna". While there is no set scientific definition for this term, it typically applies to animals over 100 lbs., or in some cases 1,000 lbs. In general, the term is most often used to describe land animals, usually mammals, larger than an average human in size and weight. While most animals alive today that are considered "megafauna" pale in comparison to the giant dinosaurs of the Mesozoic Era and the massive mammals of the Ice Age, there are still some stunning examples of modern megafauna. These include the African elephant, which is the largest living land animal, and the giraffe, which holds the title of tallest.
