  • The smallest known species of penguin, rockhopper penguins are classified under three subspecies: the southern, eastern, and northern rockhopper penguin. As their name suggests, they spend most of their time on the rocks of different land masses in the southern hemisphere.
  • Scientific Name: Genus Eudyptes
  • Characteristics: Known for aggressively defending their eggs during incubation, you might want to approach this rancorous rockhopper with caution! Hand painted and artfully sculpted, all Safari wildlife figurines are designed with true-to-life realism and faithfully capture the essence of each animal they depict.
  • Size and Color: Easily distinguishable due to their blood red eyes, orange beaks, and the yellow, orange, and black feathers on top of their heads, rockhopper penguins are quite the visual spectacle! Standing 2.15 inches tall and 2.75 inches wide, both dimensions of this figurine are a bit longer than the length of a stick of lip balm.
  • The Rockhopper Penguin is part of the Wild Safari® Sea Life.
  • All of our products are Non-toxic and BPA free.
  • History:

Although rockhopper penguins are the most numerous penguin species, their population is sadly declining. Commercial over-fishing, pollution, and other factors have cut the penguins' population by 90 percent since the early 20th century. Many of their breeding colonies on the various island and land masses they inhabit are significantly affected, and some estimates suggest rockhopper penguins will soon transition from vulnerable to endangered.
