There are over 300 known species of octopus, many of which are widely distributed around the world’s oceans. All octopuses are venomous, although only the blue-ringed octopus poses a threat to humans. Thankfully, most species of octopus are not considered threatened or endangered, although some niche species are believed to be vulnerable.

Octopuses are not considered endangered at this time but some areas do have protections in place to ensure their continued survival. In Washington State, for example, there are strict rules concerning where and how giant Pacific octopus can be caught.
