History:

The ecosystems of Asia include many unique and diverse animal species, including a number known as "living fossils", a term used to describe an organism that is the sole surviving species of a family or group and has no close living relatives. The red panda falls into this category. The giant panda, despite its name, is not closely related, and is actually a primitive species of bear. The moon bear is another ancient bear species, and it is believed that it may be the most primitive example of the genus Ursus, which also contains black, grizzly and polar bears of the Americas.
