The Roman Senate was the prevailing political body of Ancient Rome. They issued decrees that local governments would follow, and would hear issues brought forth by magistrates.

The Senate was one of the longest lasting institutions in all of Rome. It lasted from the establishment of the city of Rome, through the Roman Republic and Roman Empire, and on until 7th century A.D. It began as an advisory council to the king, and rose in influence and power in the middle of the Roman Republic. With the advent of the Roman Empire, the Senate lost much of its politlcal power. Senators could be identified by their purple togas.
