Purple is a fairly rare color among dragons, suggesting that the Jewel Dragon may have been bred by royalty at some point, although no one is sure why. Because they are more likely to filch a treasure than protect it, they would not have made excellent guardians. They are friendly, however, so it’s possible they are related to Happy Dragons, but their somewhat airy and self-centered nature makes them less companionable than other species. The mystery remains, however, because Jewel Dragons carry their treasures about instead of hiding them in caves and dungeons. They are not easily studied because they are naturally defensive about their jewels.
Long ago, the city of Atlantis was a bustling port, home to untold riches. It was said that a set of jewels gave the city great power and kept it safe from the sea and from invaders. The jewels were large blue sapphires, gifts from an ancient mermaid city. Locked away within a vault in the city center, they’d passed out of memory and become only legends. But some have longer memories than others. A Jewel Dragon knew of these gorgeous sapphires and desired them for its own. It flew into the city on a dark night, the sound of waves drowning out the flapping of its wings. It entered the stone vault in the center of the city, where guards long ago ceased to keep watch, and snatched the bright blue jewels. Flying away, the Jewel Dragon smiled at its latest find, while the city slept below. Alas, the jewels did have great power, and the city suffered without them, eventually sinking into the sea, where it too passed from memory into legend.
