Ponies are equines just like horses, but their wild ancestors were smaller simply because they lived in less desirable habitats that limited their growth. Many of these varieties lived in northern Europe, where they were eventually domesticated for their usefulness on farms. Like horses, ponies and strong and smart, yet they take up less space and consume less food, both necessities in harsher climates. For their mass, ponies can pull proportionally more weight than horses, further increasing their utility. From these auspicious beginnings born of difficulty, ponies have been domesticated and spread worldwide, and the qualities that kept them alive in harsher lands now make them highly desirable today.
