Like other ocean dwelling mammals, the Sea Lion’s ancestors lived on land. Sea lions are related to whales and dolphins, all creatures thought to share an ancestor that moved from land back into water, a seemingly counterintuitive move that begins to make sense when considering how the oceans have changed over millions of years. The recent discovery of a 5-million-year-old web-footed mammal that spent time on land and in water lends credence to the theory, as transitional figures often do.

California sea lions live in colonies of a thousand or more on beaches off the Pacific coast. Because their flippers have the same bone structure as our arms, sea lions can move around easily on land and in the water.
