The rare snow dragon watches over the year-round ice of the south pole, never leaving the continent of Antarctica. The magnificent beast collects sunlight during the six months of summer and releases it in a slow glow during the subsequent six months of winter.

  • Scientific Name: Draco articus
  • Characteristics: This figure shows the magnificent adaptations the snow dragon has made to survive its harsh Antarctic habitat. Thick scales provide an impenetrable layer to keep out the cold, while long, sharp claws ensure traction in ice and snow.
  • Size and Color: Nearly six inches tall, the bright white snow dragon is about the height of a pop bottle. Contrasting the glow-in-the-dark white scales are bright yellow claws and red eyes.
  • The Glow-in-the-Dark Snow Dragon is part of the Dragons® collection.
  • All of our products are Non-toxic and BPA free.

History

Antarctica was once part of a massive supercontinent nearer to the equator. When it broke away, it was still a fairly tropical place, and many species of dinosaurs made the long, slow ride south. Eventually, the cold did nearly all of them in, but one species, descended from the carnivore Allosaurus, adapted enough to survive the rapidly changing environment. Over the years, in the absence of other land-based predators, the small group of snow dragons came to dominate the continent, although their size remained smaller due to the environment.

Story

The snow dragon crouched low, blending with its icy surroundings. Impervious to the cold, it could wait for hours if needed for an unsuspecting penguin to waddle by, but today it was after something different. He was a young snow dragon, and in order to be considered an adult, he must pass the final snow dragon trial, a dive into the frigid blue waters off the ice shelf, where he must swim to the bottom, retrieve a dragon stone, and return to the surface. The cold would not bother him, but he’d heard of strange beasts living in these waters—black-and-white creatures much larger than he that swam with ease. There was nothing for it. Drawing a breath into his massive lungs, the dragon clawed forward and dove, ice cracking as he broke through the thin layer on the surface. His weight carried him to the bottom, where just enough sun shown to illuminate the dark dragon stones scattered across the seabed. Clutching one in his claws, he pushed away and saw upward, when a huge shadow passed overhead. It was no fish, but something much bigger. The large predator seemed to sense the snow dragon, for it suddenly turned and swam toward him, black and white mouth agape. The snow dragon shot forward by pushing its powerful wings down, breaking from the surface with a set of toothy jaws snapping just inches behind him. He’d done it. He turned, swooping over the blue sea, to watch the gigantic sea creature dive back into the depths.
