  • The association of four-leaf clovers and luck predates any breakfast cereal. A 17th century Englishman wrote of the good fortune of finding a four-leaf clover, maybe drawing on older legends. Not to be confused with the shamrock, the clover is a near-universal symbol of luck.

  • History

Although old texts and older legends tell of four-leaf clovers bringing luck, the symbol really did see an immense increase in popularity in 1963, when it debuted in a breakfast cereal featuring other good luck charms. It’s often used interchangeably with the Irish shamrock, but they are not the same, for the shamrock is a young clover with three leaves, and its symbolism has some religious roots. Whatever they are called, good-luck charms, amulets, or talisman, objects that bring favor have been part of nearly every culture for all of recorded history.
