Although old texts and older legends tell of four-leaf clovers bringing luck, the symbol really did see an immense increase in popularity in 1963, when it debuted in a breakfast cereal featuring other good luck charms. It’s often used interchangeably with the Irish shamrock, but they are not the same, for the shamrock is a young clover with three leaves, and its symbolism has some religious roots. Whatever they are called, good-luck charms, amulets, or talisman, objects that bring favor have been part of nearly every culture for all of recorded history.
