Africa is a massive continent, home to all kinds of diverse wildlife, including many unique endangered animals. Cheetahs, giraffes, African elephants, hippopotamuses, mountain zebras and lions are all listed as "Vulnerable" by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN). This means if action is not taken to secure their futures, these species could become threatened with extinction. The Grevy's zebra, meanwhile, is considered "Endangered", and its population is estimated to have declined 75% since the 1970s. The black rhinoceros is in the most difficult situation of them all. It is considered "Critically Endangered" and faces threats from habitat destruction and illegal hunting. Some subspecies of this rhino are in immediate danger of becoming extinct. Anti-poaching efforts are trying to turn the decline around, but there is still much work to be done.
