From the Triassic Period 251 million years ago to the end of the Cretaceous around 66 million years ago, it was the time of the dinosaur. These beasts ruled the earth and grew massive, with the largest of the mighty sauropods growing well over 100 feet long.

While it was long believed that all of the dinosaurs died out at the end of the Cretaceous Period due to a mysterious extinction event, it is now known that a small group of theropod dinosaurs lived on and evolved into the animals we now know as birds.

Dimetrodon, a synapsid with traits of both mammals and reptiles, is a popular prehistoric animal due to its distinctive sail. It is often mistakenly thought of as a dinosaur, though it actually lived many millions of years before the first dinosaurs, during the Permian Period, almost 300 million years ago.
