Some of the most popular prehistoric creatures in existence, dinosaurs ruled the Earth for 165 million years as the dominant land animals on the planet. While most dinosaurs disappeared during a mass extinction event around 66 million years ago, a small group of theropods remained and eventually evolved into the creatures we know today as birds.
Dinosaurs came in all shapes and sizes, from the tiny Microraptor to the giant sauropods like Apatosaurus. During their time as the ruling group of animals, they shared the world with the flying pterosaurs of the sky, and the swimming mosasaurs and plesiosaurs in the sea. While it often gets grouped with the dinosaurs, the sail-backed Dimetrodon actually lived much earlier and was a member of a group of animals known as synapsids.
