Lasting from 1861 to 1865, the American Civil War is statistically the bloodiest conflict America has ever taken part in. Fought by the national government allied with 28 northern states under the Union banners against 11 southern secessionist states of the Confederacy, the Civil War’s death tolls were estimated at 620,000 American lives.

Often believed to be the biggest issue that sparked the war, the national government decreed that slavery was to be illegal in every state. However, many Southerners believed the practice was necessary to their way of life, and stated so in their declarations of secession from the Union. Mississippi called slavery "the greatest material interest in the world".

Ultimately, what followed these fierce disagreements was one of the most brutal and taxing periods of war in American history.
