  • History:

Why do we fear bugs, snakes and other “creepy crawlies”? It’s still something of a mystery, but it’s probably a combination of evolution and culture. Over time, our brains have been conditioned to be sharply aware of tiny, skittering things. Likewise, our culture has associated many of these creatures with unhealthy or unsanitary environments. So we feel disgust, and then we feel fear.

Our fear of snakes is a little easier to understand. While most people don’t like squirmy, scaly things, there’s a reason for humans to be wary of snakes, which could be venomous and deliver a deadly bite. Even so, most snakes would rather flee than attack a human, although if startled or provoked they may strike.
