Product Description

Dalmatians are the only truly spotted dog breed, which helps with studying their long history. Spotted Dalmatians appear in paintings in Egyptian tombs running alongside chariots, much like their more modern counterparts are imagined running alongside fire engines. They appear centuries later in a 14th-century Italian fresco. Most famously, they are associated with firefighters, but even that association has deep roots. Because of their energy and intelligence, Dalmatians were long used as coach dogs, running alongside horse-drawn carriages to keep the horses from getting spooked and to guide their progress. Of course, early fire trucks were carriages themselves, horse drawn wagons that carried a fire box and used steam power for water pressure. Naturally, then, Dalmatians were the dog of choice to run alongside and guide the horses. History became legend, and today it’s impossible not to associate firefighters and Dalmatians.
