History:

Lions are hypercarnivores, meaning their diet consists almost entirely of meat. They prey on a wide range of mammals, with a preference for hoofed mammals (ungulates). The lion's diet often varies by area - lions from certain areas have more of a preference for Thomson's gazelle, while those from another area may prefer giraffe or buffalo. While these larger prey animals are too much for one lion alone to take down, a pack of lions hunting together can get the job done.
