Bull sharks are far from the largest shark species, but they are amongst the most dangerous. Although it’s important to remember that shark attacks are exceptionally rare regardless of the species, bull sharks are responsible for a large portion of reported bites. They are known to swim up fresh water rivers and estuaries, particularly in South America, Africa, and India, and as a result encounter humans much more often than other types of sharks.

The basking shark is listed as vulnerable, although local populations in the northeastern Atlantic and northern Pacific Oceans are considered endangered. Their numbers have declined due to a combination of overfishing and a slow population recovery rate. The species is protected by legislation in several countries, including the United Kingdom, the United States and New Zealand.
