After Daedelus assisted in Theseus’s murder of the Minotaur, the King of Crete, Minos, imprisoned both Daedalus and his son, Icarus.

Too clever to remain a prisoner, Daedalus made wings for himself and Icarus out of feathers and wax. Before the two took off, to fly over the sea and away from the island, Daedalus advised Icarus to fly neither too close to the sea nor too close to the sun.
