Glass-making dates back thousands of years. Egyptians and Phoenicians made objects out of glass, and they likely realized its magnifying potential. Anecdotes of glass used for magnification appear in Roman histories, including Pliny. The trail gets warmer in the thirteenth century, when Roger Bacon is credited with first using a magnifying glass for scientific study. By the sixteenth century, eyeglass makers Zacharias and Hans Jansen invented the first microscope, which allowed 9x magnification. Today’s electron microscopes allow researchers to see details within cells and view objects down to the atomic level.
