The Red Panda is considered a “living fossil” as it has no close relatives alive today. It has been previously placed in many mammal families, including the Raccoon family and Bear family, and was once placed in a separate family along with the Giant Panda. Though they share a name, it is now understood that these two animals are not so closely related as previously thought.
Red Pandas are endangered, facing threats including habitat loss due to deforestation, and collection for the illegal pet trade. They remain popular zoo animals, though the capture of wild animals for captive exhibits has gone down since its endangered status was established. It is estimated that there may be anywhere from 2,500 to 20,000 Red Pandas still left in the wild.
