Statistically, the Civil War is the bloodiest conflict America has ever taken part in despite it only lasting from 1861 to 1865. Fought between 28 northern states backed by the national government and the 11 southern secessionist states of the Confederacy, the Civil War took over 620,000 American lives. Often believed to be the main catalyst of the war, unrest between the north and the south began after the national government decreed that slavery was to be illegal in the entire continental U.S. Many southerners believed that slavery was necessary in keeping their economy afloat. As disagreements about slavery and other political matters became more and more drastic, war was ultimately declared when Confederate forces fired upon Fort Sumter, a Union outpost in South Carolina.
