This unusual long-necked dinosaur was named in 1983 based on bones excavated in 1977 from Sichuan Province, China. Its name even means ‘Sichuan Province lizard’. Further discoveries described in 1989 revealed that Shunosaurus had a spiked club on the end of its tail, an unusual adaptation because sauropod typically have long tapering whip-like tails.

Shunosaurus’ spiked club would have made an effective protective weapon against attacking predators. Sauropods are famous for their long necks, but Shunosaurus is also unusual in this regard because it has one of the shortest necks of all the sauropods. This suggests that it browsed on low vegetation on or close to the ground.

Shunosaurus lived in the Middle Jurassic about 170 million years ago. It shared its habitat with a wide variety of other Chinese dinosaurs including plated stegosaurs and predatory theropods. There is just one valid species of Shunosaurus, S. lii, named after Li Bing, the magistrate who governed what is now Sichuan Province from 256-251 BC.
