Dachshunds are a smaller breed of domesticated dog known for being curious, friendly, and spunky. Dachshunds were originally bred to be hunting hounds, so they have long bodies, short legs, strong muscles, and an excellent sense of smell.

  • History: The word Dachshund comes from German, with dachs meaning badger and hund meaning dog. Therefore, quite literally, they were badger dogs, and the 300-year-old breed still retains many of the unique skills for which they were originally bred in Germany. Dachshunds were recognized as a breed by the American Kennel Club in 1885, and today they are the 13th most popular domesticated dog breed, right between Siberian Huskies and Doberman Pinschers.
